Overview on What Causes Heart Attack
Most of the time, heart attack happens as a result of CHD (Coronary Heart Disease) which is also known as coronary artery disease. CHD is a condition where a substance known as plaque builds up in the coronary arteries (arteries that supply blood rich in oxygen to your heart). When this plaque builds up in the arteries, it leads to a condition known as atherosclerosis. Eventually, a section of the plaque breaks open inside the artery and causes a blood clot to occur on the plaque’s surface. If the clot becomes big, it can completely block blood flow and if the blockage is not treated immediately, part of the heart muscle starts to die.
Another cause of a heart attack is what is called a coronary artery spasm (a serious tightening of the coronary artery). Coronary artery spasm cuts off the blood flow through the artery and occurs in coronary arteries that are not affected by atherosclerosis.

- Emotional pain or stress
- Exposure to extreme cold
- Drug abuse especially cocaine
